چکیده

The bijel is a new class of soft material comprised of two fluids arrested in a bicontinuous configuration on the mesoscale. We stabilize the fluid structure using an interfacial layer of silica particles. The particles become trapped at the liquid-liquid interface because they reduce the exposed area; this relies on the particles being partially wetted by both liquids. We use water and 2,6-lutidine which have an accessible demixing transition and the particles are silica with tuned wettability. Dispersing the particles in the mixed phase and then warming through the lower critical temperature into the demixed phase leads to our novel fluid-bicontinuous structures [1]. The two fluids of the bijel are in contact through the interstices in the particle monolayer. This, combined with the arrangement of domains, means that bijels are ideal for use as membrane contactors on the microfluidic scale.

Dynamics and rheology of nonpolar bijels.

Bicontinuous, interfacially jammed, emulsion gels (bijels) are a novel class of materials composed of two immiscible phases with interpenetrating domains that are stabilized by a monolayer of colloidal particles at the interface. However, existing bijel systems so far all consist of at least one polar fluid, which is believed to be essential to induce electrostatic repulsion for stabilizing int...

Arrest of fluid demixing by nanoparticles: a computer simulation study.

We use lattice Boltzmann simulations to investigate the formation of arrested structures upon demixing of a binary solvent containing neutrally wetting colloidal particles. Previous simulations for symmetric fluid quenches pointed to the formation of "bijels": bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels. These should be created when a glassy monolayer of particles forms at the fluid-fluid i...

Bijels stabilized using rod-like particles.

Bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels, in short 'bijels', rely on a trapped layer of colloidal particles for their stability. These structures have traditionally been created using spherical colloidal particles. Here we show for the first time the use of rod-shape particles to stabilize bijels. We show that domain size decreases more rapidly with particle concentration in the case of ...

Bijels formed by direct mixing.

By combining interfacial nanoparticles and molecular surfactants together with immiscible liquids of high viscosity, we develop an alternative strategy for creating bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels (bijels). These bijels are prepared from common ingredients which are widely used in industry: glycerol, silicone oil, silica nanoparticles together with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide...
